The Food Shed

A food shed is the geographical distance that food travels from where it was grown to the table.  This can encompass the farm, garden, greenhouse, processing plants, distribution centers, restaurants, retail stores, and famers markets.

Knowing the span of a food shed can help make more sustainable and environmentally sound decisions when purchasing food.  Typically, a local food system aims to have a 100-mile radius in order to reduce energy consumption and pollution, while promoting the local economy.
